Top 10 Tech predictions for 2013 – your cheat sheet

Its been a wild year in the tech world.  Heres whats I predict is coming around the corner.

1. Nexus 4 will either come in a true 4G variant or the base model will be 16GB for $299.  I say this as someone who bought a Nexus 7 tab 8gb, only to have it supplanted as the base model by the 16gb model.  The AT&T version also came out later. If you dont have a Nexus 4 now, wait. Stock will refresh with new features.

2. Nokia either goes bankrupt or finally gives in to Android.  It has to do one or the other.  The Windows phones are not selling. It had to sell its own headquarters. Ouch!

3. Apple maps gives up the project. It could happen. With the immense popularity of Apple maps, it may not be worth the cost to fight. They could always sell it off to another company. Remember Ping on itunes?  Yeah they closed that too.

4. Best Buy goes bankrupt.  Theyre already struggling and closing stores. Remember Circuit City?  Best Buy will soon also have to deal with higher taxes and health insurance legislation. Ever go there just to see a product, they buy at a lower price online?  Yeah, me too…and several other million people.  This is bad for brick and mortar stores.

5. Apple introduces iPhone 5S in June. Lots of buzz on this one. They may return to the old June introduction cycle. Making the iPhone 5 just 8 months old before its replaced. It will probably have a faster processer. And if were lucky, will come in 2 size variants.

6. Electronic medical records will continue to be God awful. The worst innovation, the worst tech support, and the most antiquated interface of any software anywhere. Please Google or Apple, even Microsoft – enter this space and show them what a real EMR looks like. Why can they sell even though they are tragically terrible?  The Federal government mandated their use.  Remember that next time your physician spends more time looking at a computer screen than you. Its not his fault, its big brothers. Imagine if you were legally forced to by a Nokia phone. It would really decrease ingenuity wouldnt it? They would know they gotcha, no matter how terrible it was, you have to buy it. Eclinicalworks, I hope your ears are burning.

7. Google will edge closer to becoming a phone company. They own the “white space,” aka super wifi. They bought Motorola, and they own Google voice. They know everything about you and where you travel. Now they can make their own phone and own the airwaves. Seems like a Google phone company is coming.

8. Google Fiber expands. Right now its in Kansas. 1 gigabyte per second. It wont be long til its not in Kansas anymore. (couldnt resist Image may be NSFW.

) Its the future of the internet.

9. Video games become less violent or sell less war games. In reaction to Sandy Hook shootings, this could happen several ways. 1. Legislation from US goverment. 2. Less interested in killing as a form of entertainment, from kids themselves. The shooting hit too close to home, and now wont be viewed as “fun”. Parents wont buy killing games for their kids any longer.  Watch and see.

10. Facebook user base starts to erode.  Does that surprise you?  Well, its been king for over 5 years. Remember Myspace?  Yeah, its tanked.  Teens dont view Facebook as “cool” any longer, theyre looking for something new.  I can tell you many of my friends are spending less time on it than they were a year ago.  Notably they are being viewed as corporate and big brother. Charging for messages, playing advertisement videos in your stream, and running ads doesnt help either. Watch for defection.
